Virginia Trekkers on VSTE Island

Always a favorite on VSTE Island ~ the four instructional technology resource teachers (ITRT) from Henrico County Public Schools aka the Virginia Trekkers ~ David, Brad, Frank, and Alfonso ~ present their new adventures of "trekking" across the state of Virginia bringing video podcasts from the different regions into our classrooms as virtual field trips. Check out their newly updated website: www.virginiatrekkers.com

Spiff Whitfield, founder of Virtual Pioneers in SL, speaks to VSTE about his organization. Virtual Pioneers is a very successful educational group that tours historical sims every two weeks on Sunday evenings.

Mandie Mimulus Trains New Volunteers
Wednesday night Mandie trained four of our new volunteer VSTE Island facilitators to run the media set up at the VSTE Pavilion. We are now all able to assist a guest speaker with slides and video. Kathy Schrock and the Virginia Trekkers have spoken to us here, and this week Matt Monjan was our guest speaker. Several exciting speakers are lined up in the coming weeks. You don't want to miss them! Get a Second Life!

Last night at our weekly team meeting we began inviting members to come with ideas for future meetings. Yosemite and Southern both came at 9:30 PM EDT with specific ideas that they are willing to develop and lead on VSTE Island at Monday night meetings this summer. It's exciting to see VSTE in SL grow like this!
Yosemite will take members on a science based tour of space sims on June 29th while some of us are at NECC in Washington DC.
Southern will do a fun advanced building project over two weeks that will have us creating new, unique avatars for ourselves.
Do you have an idea for a future meeting? Whether you have a plan you want to present and carry out yourself or an idea that you'd like us to develop, we'd like to hear from you. YOU help make VSTE in SL what it is! See you in-world.

Found two really neat resources in .pdf format.

The first is a "Quickstart Guide" available at http://secondlife.com/whatis/ look for the link under Learn more about Second Life

The second is a free chapter about managing your inventory from the book "Second Life the Official Guide" at http://secondlife.com/corporate/slguide.php Just click the book for the free chapter.

This Monday the one and only Kathy Dryburgh (Kathy Schrock in RL) will present at the Pavilion on VSTE Island. We have asked her to share how she uses Second Life for professional development, collaboration, and networking.
I am sure we will hear some new ideas, sparking our own creativity about how we can use this awesome resource - VSTE Island - to grow as teachers and learners!
Tell your friends and come early. We expect a full sim!

This past Monday's meeting was awesome. Alfredo (SL Name) took the lead and sent us hither and yon as we tried to win 500 Lindens! He explained nings and gave us a choice of three sims to visit, with specific tasks to complete and post to a ning by the end of the meeting. It was fun and we learned!
