I'm starting to use a UbD template that my principal provided to my staff. We are all supposed to write at least one UbD unit this year. I am trying to contribute to or write one per grade level for 3rd, 4th, and 5th. It's not a true UbD Unit when I do it on my own for computer lab, of course but I'm collaborating with my gifted resource teacher and library media specialist and encouraging the classroom teachers to participate.
Thanks to our school boards new goals the teachers are interested in alternate assessments more than in the past. I'm working that angle as much as possible!

Come to the VSTE Island campfire for the second in a series of book talks about Understanding by Design, by Wiggins and McTighe. Witchyrichy will facilitate our disucssion of chapters 4 through 7. Even if you read it a while ago or are just wondering what UbD is, you are welcome. We are K12 and higher educ.

I just finished the chapter on essential questions. There are six facets of essential questions and four connotations for "essential." I found myself thinking, "How in the world am I going to manage all this!?" But I can say I have mastered highlighting while floating in a pool with a cold drink, a dog on the float, while fighting off a bee, and not getting the book wet. :-)

Thank you, Karen, for facilitating our group last night. It was great to see a group of elementary teachers there. Our elem group of six is going to work on a Civil War unit. We have several CRSs working with a super fifth grade teacher who will likely lead the way.

We need a few more secondary or higher ed folks to come fill in the spaces! I will upload some pictures when I'm home on my Mac tonight.
