Holiday Season

As we approach the holidays it is becoming very obvious in the decorations in my school. I've seen Christmas trees and stockings that say Merry Christmas. How much do you decorate for the holidays and which holidays do you decorate for? It seems the kids like the decorations, but I'm not sure how you go about decorating so that no child feels left out. Do you try to decorate for and address all the holidays or just the holidays your students celebrate? Or do you decorate at all?

Technology v. Hands-On

I recently completed a technology inventory for the school I am working in and was amazed by the amount of technology available for the students to use. One of the reasons I was so shocked was due to the fact that I had seen very little of this technology actually used in the classroom. With all the technology available, how often to you actually put technology in your lesson plan? Along this same line, there are two competing theories in my classes on teaching - one professor believes technolog… Continue

ESL

In the 3rd grade class that I observe there is a young girl who is in the process of learning English. It is apparent that directions are very difficult to follow for her and she is often much slower in getting her work done that the other students. Although, the school has Spanish lessons in the classes a couple times a week and that teacher works with her, she is mostly on her own in a class that only speaks English. How do you help these students? I hate to see her fall behind in understandin… Continue

Without _________ in my classroom I would not survive . . . .

I have been doing my practicum hours in a highly technically advanced school. There are mounted projectors, a document camera, a smart board, and many other tools in each classroom. Talking with people from other schools and looking at the schools I went to, I understand that not all schools have these technologies. What do you have at your school that you use the most? What sorts of technology would you say are invaluable to your classroom? Would you not be able to survive without your projecto… Continue

Delayed for Technical Difficulties

We have been learning a lot of different ways to use technology in the classroom recently. Programs such as MovieMaker, VoiceThread, and PhotoStory are no longer foreign terms to us. As amazing as these tools are, I rarely see the teachers in my school use them. Are they just too difficult, time consuming, unreliable? What is the reason for not using them? How often do you use them in your classroom? When you do use them, what purpose do they serve? I have heard a lot of teachers in my practicum… Continue
