Technology in Homeschooling

Growing up I knew a lot of kids who were homeschooled and sometimes their schooling seemed really disconnected from mine. Are there any technologies that are designed specifically for homeschooling or any that would be particularly helpful in keeping homeschooled students connected with other students so they don't miss out of the social aspects of schooling?

When the teachers don't pay attention...

Recently I took part in my grade level's planning period where the school's technology teacher came in to give a tutorial on a new piece of software. About half the teachers were listening and taking notes, but the other half carried on their conversation and completely ignored the technology teacher. The Privelege of Computer Time

My cooperating teacher has computers in her classroom but I've never seen her use them for an actual lesson (although it could just be that I'm not in there at the right time or it could be that there are only six computers for a class of 19 second graders). The only time I see students on the computers is when they're allowed "special time" to play games (or to take Accelerated Reader test). Do you think this could cause students to think that the main purpose of computers is entertainment?

Putting Technology into Second Grade Elections

For my social studies practicum I have to write and teach a lesson about elections. It can be about this specific election or just elections/voting in general. I'll be teaching my lesson in second grade and my practicum teacher suggested I use some of the technology I'm learning about since I'm more up to date on what's out there than she is. Does anyone have any suggestions for adding technology into my lesson?
