After reading the 2010 Horizon Report, I decided to focus on one of the five trends that was discussed within the article.  The trend that "Technology continues to profoundly affect the way we work, collaborate, communicate, and succeed.  Information technologies impact how people work, play, learn, socialize, and collaborate."  All I could think about is recent trends in technology and I am not talking about the use of cell phones.  Most of my students wonder how we survived a generation ago without the advent of recent technology.  However, what strikes my interest is the way in which we have been able to improve communication in recent years.  Some people are able to "work at home" due to the improvements in technology.  Military personnel who are oversees are now able to SEE and talk to their respective families through the computer!!!!!!!  People interviewing for jobs are able to do this from their home.  Heck, you can order groceries and food from restaurants from your computer!  These are just a few of the examples of ways in which technology has vastly changed the way we communicate!

Tim, I still have an overhead projector in my classroom.  I cannot remember how long it has been since I used it.  I wonder if it works?

I was watching the movie Jarhead the other day and the advances of technology were mention in a scene.  As the marines were talking about meeting the Iraqis on the battlefield, one mentioned that they wouldn't see in battle because unlike Vietnam where it took months to move a few thousand feet, the battles/bombing would push thousands of miles in within seconds.  PJ really hit the nail on the head, technology is changing the way that we do everything.  You can order pizza, send messages or even have virtual classrooms.  It's truly amazing when you think back to being in a classroom where a teacher had to use an overhead or a real-to-real to bring in multimedia.

and I love how this type of article makes you think about what might be next. you mention military personnel on Skype type software - I just envision it becoming clearer and more defined and running more in real time but there has got to be so much more to it that my 40+ year old mind can't muster. That makes these resources more valuable to me. good thought on focusing on just one thing.....

This is how our society is moving.  I think it is amazing.  We can't be stuck in the times and continue to do things like they were done in the past.

Technology has come a long way and it has been a wonderful addition to education! I only hope that the other teachers can come around to the technology changes as well!
