Why Technology in Education Rocks in Virginia

Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE)

Technically, I am going to VSTE, but the excitement is still the same!

A cross state road trip, combining technology and education, may not sound fun to everyone, but I am really looking forward to it. I have been going over my packing list, but so far I can only think about the technology I need to bring with me. No way can I forget my backup to the backup laptop, or my cell phone recharger cable! That stuff is important. I can swing by Walmart and get fresh underwear and they always give you a free toothbrush and toothpaste at the hotel, right?

Contrary to popular belief, I am not going just for the swag (although my kids would never let me into the house without a massive amount of it), and I am not going because of my need for technology emersion every few months (although if I don't get my fix, I go to Best Buy and drool a lot). The biggest reason that I want to be at VSTE is to be around others who share similar interests in technology in education. It is hard being the techno convincer in the school, always arguing in support of using a new tool or doing things in a new way. VSTE is a chance to get excited again, see the new things that are out there, find out what other people are doing and feel refreshed.

Last night on VSTE Island in Second Life, Matt Monjan gave a presentation on digital storytelling. I am really looking forward to hearing him in Real Life too! He was very good and everyone had a great time. Matt was one of the most popular speakers we have ever had at VSTE Island. Just hearing him reminded me of all the fun that is just a fun short weeks away.

I hope that many new people will come to the Second Life BYOL sessions this time at VSTE. Second Life is a great way to feel connected to VSTE and continue with professional development all year around. This time at VSTE we think we have the IP address issue fixed so that we can create as many new accounts in Second Life as we need.

I am looking forward to Sunday, November 29th, when I hit the road for VSTE... I just hope I don't forget my Flip camera or my mini gorillia tripod. You never know when that will come in handy!
